The world is faced with increased threats to national and international security.

With extraordinary advances in transportation, communication and technology, the world is indeed now a much smaller place thus enabling drug dealers, terrorists, illegal arms dealers, corrupt public officials and others to operate and expand their criminal enterprises. Governments and police in all regions of the world are grappling to come to terms with these new challenges. In that perspective, promoting and developing international police co-operation is quintessential.

In co-operation with its partner institutions in Lyon, INTERPOL is organizing an international law symposium on the theme of "International Police Co-operation in the context of Public International Law". The decision to organize this symposium was based on the finding that the police, their functions and prerogatives, and more particularly international police co-operation, despite being wide-ranging, topical subjects, are, generally speaking, rarely covered or taught in academic circles. The objective is therefore to contribute to the examination and development of the legal principles relevant to international police enforcement cooperation.

The symposium will address all three dimensions of international police co-operation (interstate co-operation, co-operation through international organizations, established mechanisms protecting individuals) but will also consist in a round table on the mutual influence of law and practice.

The symposium is open to both academics and practitioners of international police co-operation, thus ensuring positive discussion and practical outcomes.

The symposium is the forerunner to a Joint Summer Course on international police co-operation, also to be held in Lyon in 2008.
