4th International Conference on the Illicit Traffic in Cultural Property Stolen in Central and Eastern Europe
Sinaïa City, Romania from 7 to 9 September 2004


In accordance with the working program, the General Secretariat held the 4th International Conference on the Illicit Traffic in Cultural Property Stolen in Central and Eastern Europe. The event was jointly organized with the Romanian authorities and took place in Sinaïa City, Romania from 7 to 9 September 2004.

This conference is organized every three years in one of the countries of the region and follows those held in Prague in 1995, in Budapest in 1998 and on the island of Brijuni, Croatia in 2001.

C. 100 delegates from 25 Interpol member countries in addition to international and regional partner organizations (UNESCO, WCO, Europol) and observers discussed cultural property crime particularly affecting this region, the legal framework and crime fighting measures.

The three images alongside represent three of the master paintings stolen from the Brukental Museum in Sibiu, Romania in 1968 and recovered 30 years later in Miami, Florida due to the use of Interpol's stolen art database.

The delegates agreed on a wide range of measures to further improve activity in this area.
