Interpol European Committee
The 60th General Assembly session (Punta del Este, November 1991) established
the Interpol European Committee (IEC) with the following terms of reference
and requirements for the Committee members:
Terms of reference
- In the context of Interpol, to examine the strategic, policy and practical
issues that arise from co-operation to combat crime and to make recommendations
to members of the European Regional Conference.
- The Committee may deal with matters referred to it by the General Secretariat,
the European Regional Conference or individual member countries.
- The Chairman presents a report on the activities of the Committee to the
European Regional Conference.
Membership
- The Committee consists of representatives from eight member states, elected
by the European Regional Conference for a period of four years and, ex-officio,
a European delegate from the Executive Committee nominated by the members
of the Executive Committee. The Chairman of the IEC is chosen from amidst
the members of the Committee by secret ballot.
- For the Committee to be effective, it is necessary that the members are
of decision makers level, fully conversant with the domestic policing requirements
and possibilities.
- The current members of the IEC are from Armenia, Austria, Belarus, Croatia, Finland, Netherland, Portugal and Turkey.
Sessions
- The IEC shall hold ordinary meetings three times a year at the organizations
General Secretariat in Lyon.
- Extra meetings may be convened by the IEC when the need arises.
Working parties
In the context of the above terms of reference, the IEC may set up special
working parties. However, a decision which may have financial consequences other
than the organizations running costs has to be approved in conformity
with Resolution AGN/64/RES/1.
