Lyon , France – Senior police and government officials from 37 countries in the Asian region will participate in the INTERPOL Asian Regional Workshop on Preventing Bioterrorism workshop in Singapore from 27 to 29 March.

Scientific and health experts from around the world will also be participating in the three day workshop, which aims to encourage greater regional co-operation and a more co-ordinated response to the threat of bioterrorism.

In addition to discussions on issues including bio incident investigation, laboratory security and effective legislation, those attending the workshop will also take part in a simulation of a major bioterror event which will highlight the need for a well co-ordinated national, regional and international response.

The opening ceremony at 9 a.m. on Monday 27 March will be open to accredited media and will be followed by a press conference at 9.30 a.m. at which INTERPOL Secretary General Ronald K. Noble and Commissioner of the Singapore Police Force Khoo Boon Hui will be present.

The remainder of the session will be closed to the media, however requests to interview police and scientific experts in attendance may be accommodated.

Foreign journalists wishing to attend the opening ceremony and press conference are advised to request accreditation immediately and should apply online for a Professional Visit Pass from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) at www.ica.gov.sg under Visitor Services.

Attendance at the event should also be confirmed with the Singapore Police Media Information Centre on +65 6478 2122/33 no later than Friday 24 March.

The workshop will be held in the Grand Ballroom, Level 4, Copthorne Waterfront Hotel, Singapore.

The Asian Regional Workshop on Preventing Bioterrorism is the second in a series of three to be held around the world following the first INTERPOL Global Conference on preventing Bio-terrorism in Lyon in March 2005 which was attended by more than 500 delegates. Cape Town, South Africa hosted the first regional workshop in November 2005 and the Americas workshop will be held in Chile in July 2006.
