At the 16th American Regional Conference, which took place in May 1999 in San Salvador, Member States voted almost unanimously to set up a Sub-Regional Bureau for Central America, which would be based in San Salvador.
The ICPO-INTERPOL General Assembly, meeting in Seoul, Korea, from 8 to 13 November 1999 at its 68th session, authorized the Secretary General to negotiate a draft Headquarters Agreement for the Sub-Regional Bureau with the Salvadoran authorities.
Subsequently, the General Assembly, meeting in Rhodes, Greece, from 30 October to 4 November 2000 at its 69th session, approved the Draft Headquarters Agreement for a Sub-Regional Bureau for Central America in San Salvador, as given at Appendix 1 to Report AGN/69/RAP/22.
- Represent the Organization's Secretary General in the sub-region
- Support the National Central Bureaus (NCBs) in their day-to-day work
- Strengthen and improve international police co-operation
- Support and facilitate the work of the Organization's deliberative bodies.
