INTERPOL’s Sub-Regional Bureau for East Africa was opened in Nairobi on 13 September 1999, following a Headquarters’ Agreement signed with the Government of the Republic of Kenya on 14 October 1998.
The purpose of SRB Nairobi is to;
- Represent the INTERPOL General Secretariat in Eastern Africa.
- Provide support to the Interpol National Central Bureaus (NCBs) in their daily work so as to strengthen and improve international police co-operation.
- Support and facilitate activities of Eastern Africa Police Chiefs Co-operation (EAPCCO)
The SRB Nairobi has two main responsibilities;
- To represent the General Secretariat in the region and provide Interpol with insight into crime problems facing the region and opportunities to contribute to developing agendas and follow up on recommendations;
- To act as the Secretariat for EAPCCO (The Eastern Africa Police Chiefs Co-operation Organization) and help organize conferences, initiate agendas and support the implementation of resolutions from regional conferences and EAPCCO meetings.
The responsibility of SRB Nairobi as representative of the INTERPOL General Secretariat and the as Secretariat of EAPCCO, provides the best possible chance to combine regional needs with Interpol global crime priorities and ensure consistency.
