DNA profiling is recognized by Interpol as an essential component of police investigations to identify individuals and link crime scenes. This powerful forensic tool has proven to be reliable and cost-effective, with more crimes being solved and additional human, material and financial resources being saved.
The increasing number of member countries investing in this strategy provides an added means of identifying missing persons and tracing offenders who have committed crimes across international borders. Consequently, the use of DNA profiling and its international exchange can play a vital role in the fight against transnational crime.
To promote this concept, Interpol organized for the fourth time an International DNA Users’ Conference. The agenda for the conference was designed to be relevant to all individuals involved in the many aspects of the subject, including those who provide the service and those who work with the results. The themes during the conference were presented by a number of leading figures in the development and use of DNA profiling. Topics to be addressed include:
- the use of DNA evidence in tribunals
- the range of DNA techniques to support investigations
- monitoring a country’s DNA performance
- international co-operation
- mass DNA screening
- ‘cold case’ investigations
- victim identification focusing on the Thai tsunami DNA identification effort
