The Third International DNA Users' Conference welcomed 120 participants from
45 countries and 6 organizations. A total of 27
presentations
were given that covered 16 topics.
The main points that arose during this conference were:
- More DNA profiles are being collected, and in more countries, and that profiling
techniques are becoming increasingly sophisticated.
- The importance of using DNA evidence in parallel with evidence obtained
by means of other investigative tools was highlighted.
- Development projects were taking place in many parts of the world. There
was also considerable willingness from countries to help other countries set
up or improve DNA profiling facilities. Interpol and the MEG were quoted to
endeavour to provide every possible assistance and support.
- Finally, the sharing of examples of good practice and case studies in various
areas during the presentations had been extremely enlightening and no doubt
extremely useful. Consequently this was an excellent opportunity to identify
challenges and issues faced by the various countries and by Interpol.
During the conference it was detailed that the IPSG had re-structured its
DNA projects to meet the needs identified by its member countries. These included
development advice to member countries intending to introduce a DNA programme,
the hosting of conferences and the co-ordination of regional support initiatives.
Its current plans for 2004 and beyond include interactive workshops, multi-lingual
documentation and visits to key decision-takers.
