Protect child disaster victims from sexual predators. Report suspicions
to the authorities.
10/01/2005
Children residing in the countries of South East Asia which have been most affected by the Tsunami disaster are amongst the most vulnerable in the world. Many individuals with a sexual interest in children are aware of this and are known to travel to the region to sexually abuse young victims.
This unprecedented natural disaster has left many thousands of children dependent on assistance from people with whom they have previously had no contact. Children by their very nature are trusting of adults. This fact is well known to those intent on sexual abuse, and they use this knowledge to commit crime. It is highly likely that amongst those genuine aid and relief workers, there will be a small minority who have volunteered their services simply to gain access to possible victims.
It goes without saying that the vast majority of those offering assistance are committed to improving the lives of the children who have survived. They need assistance, however, to help protect children from sexual predators who have travelled to the region. INTERPOL therefore requests the public to be vigilant in ensuring that adults offering their services to help children in the aftermath of the disaster do not have ulterior motives.
Vigilance is called for and suspicions must be reported to the authorities.
